Last year we talked about how your brand represents your business. The power of branding is what makes your company stand out. Like it or not, customers judge companies by their appearances, images and first impressions.

Whether you’ve spent time building it or not, your business has a brand. Each and every business does. If you haven’t spent any time branding your business, your customers and competitors already have.

The truth is, your brand isn’t so much how you present yourself as it is what people think about you. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is credited with saying “your brand is what people say about you when you’re not around.” We think it’s a great quote that succinctly describes what a brand is, as well as how it affects your business.

So given that every business (large or small) has a brand, it’s important to ask yourself: what does my brand say about me? Whether you’re in on the conversation or not, people are talking and thinking about your business. Each case will be different, but we do have some food for thought to get you thinking about what your brand may be communicating to your audience.

First and foremost, think about the sum of your marketing and advertising efforts. Not doing much marketing and advertising? Have yet to make a logo, pen slogans, or conduct any marketing campaigns? Odds are, people will get the impression that your business is just like every other business. Without a strong brand or a strong marketing campaign for expressing that brand, it’s hard for people to have any impression at all. In other words, your business will be forgettable.

Think about your website, your fliers, your e-blasts, and any other marketing materials. Do they look well-put together, eye-catching, and modern? If your website hasn’t been updated for a few years, your brand is telling people that you’re stuck in the past, that you’re not staying in touch with the latest trends in your industry. Sloppy advertising will show that you don’t have an attention to detail.

Conversely, a well-designed, attractive advertisement shows that you’re creative, innovative, and care about making a good impression. It shows that you’re ahead of the curve, that you know your worth.

It’s like wearing a suit to a business meeting rather than raggedy old blue jeans. It doesn’t matter if it’s the same person; a suit shows that the person knows their worth and is serious about doing business.

Your brand is always talking about you. Once you figure out what it’s saying, as well as what you want it to say, you can take the steps to make your brand work for you.
